About the Department

The department was established in the year 2003 under the name of Indian Culture and Tourism Management ( till 2003, the PG program was continued as Ancient Indian History and Archaeology) In the year 2010, it was established under the changed name of Centre for
Indian History and Culture. In 2018, the name of the department was changed to History and Indian Culture, and in the same year, the History (Hons) course was started.

Mission and Objectives

The Department of History and Indian Culture is committed to fulfilling the vision of the patron founder Pt. Shriram Sharma AcharyaJi to educate & acquaint students with Knowledge of Indian History & Culture based on his authored book “ Samast Vishwa ko Bharat Ke Ajashtra Anudan” The Department aims that students not only acquire knowledge but also train them to apply this in their life to become aware, active & proud citizen with all-round development as an Individual & integral member of society.

Brief Introduction

Department Of History And Indian Culture (Established In 2010)

Brief Background of the Department

The department of History & Indian Culture at DSVV was established in 2002 in the form of Indian History, Culture and Archaeology Department. In 2004 it was named Indian Culture and Tourism Management department and since 2010, it is being operated as Indian History and Culture department. The department was started by Dr. Praveen Joshi, a specialist in archaeology, and was headed by Dr. Mamta Bhatnagar. Later on it is running under the headship of Prof. R.S. Chaturvedi. With a history of drawing together scholars from different disciplines such as archaeology, history, tourism, religion, and other subjects related to heritage preservation, the department is being benefited from a unique interdisciplinary approach to the study of Indian culture. All faculty members attend and keep themselves up to date with regular UGC courses and training programs, remaining abreast of the latest developments in teaching and in their field.

The IHC department is a small and close-knit group conducive to fostering personal ties between students and faculty members. Currently, there are 4 full-time faculty members, 39 under graduate, 06 post graduate and 5 Ph.D. students in the department.

Special features of the department is that it hosts excellent resources for students, including fully stocked Aryabhatt Library, consisting of over 25,000 books and 1,000 journals as well as its own up-to-date computer lab. Students from the department have gained practical experience through a variety of departmental study tours all over India, to prominent heritage sites such as Madurai, Bhuvaneshwar, Kanyakumari, Sanchi and local sites of Haridwar. Requirements of their programme consists of—4 classes and one practical report on a monument or museum of the student’s choice— are conducive to independent study and collaboration, as well as close work with individual faculty members.
